About Taylor O'Neil: Realistic Oil Painter & Wildlife Artist
I’m Taylor O’Neil, a painter specializing in oils that explore the beauty and character of wildlife, landscapes, and the companions that share our lives. From the quiet strength of elephants to the energy of big cats or the loyal spirit of a pet portrait, I aim to create work that blends realism with story. My collectors often tell me the work feels like more than decoration—it becomes part of the room’s energy.
The Artistic Process
Every painting begins with sketches and layered underpainting before building the depth, texture, and light that makes the subject feel present. Working primarily with high-quality oil paints, I utilize a traditional technique known as glazing. This involves applying thin, transparent layers of paint over the underpainting, allowing light to pass through and reflect off the canvas. From the rough skin of an elephant to the glossy coat of a racehorse, this time-intensive method captures the tactile reality of the subject.
The Inspiration
My work is driven by a fascination with the unspoken communication of animals. Whether it is the intelligent gaze of a primate or the alert posture of a family dog, animals possess a raw honesty that I feel compelled to translate onto canvas. I do not aim to simply replicate a photograph; I strive to capture the specific "spark" of that living being. This focus on individual personality is what turns a standard painting into a cherished portrait, preserving the memory of a favorite pet or the majesty of the wild for a lifetime.
Studio & Materials
Creating out of my home studio in Louisville, Kentucky, I use only archival-grade materials to ensure longevity. Whether you are drawn to an original canvas or a fine-art print, each piece is crafted to endure, carrying the same spirit and vibrancy for generations.
